Tofts / Tolfts / Bayford 1 Year ago
Hi,

I am trying to find out more info about a possible Ancestor Edward Tofts (his children also born in FP, although seemingly baptised Tofts, later used the name Tolfts) born about 1757 (not sure where) but died in FP and lived there since at least 1782. His wife was a Mary.

Was wondering if anyone knew anything about him please or if the parish records might be available if I were to visit the area?

I also had a 5 x great grandfather William Bayford b c1788 in FP, and i notice there seems to a fair few posts re Bayford

Many thanks
Tony

Hello Tony.....Unfortunately I can't help you with your Tofts family, though I do have a list of those who were buried or mentioned in the churchyards of Furneux and Brent Pelham.

However I do have a William Bayford in my tree, baptised in St. Mary's F.P. 1894, could he be the one
you are refering to? his parents were Ralph and Rachel (my Gt. Grandparents x 5) and his wife I believe was Mary Fisher. Let me know if I can supply you with any other information, I will help if I
can.

Best wishes

Dee.

Hi Dee,

I think there is a fair chance that it is the same William Bayford as I only had a rough date, though I currently have a wife of Sarah Whisbey

However I think my tree could be wrong, have been struggling with this branch

Do you know if your William had a daughter Mary born c1803 please?

Any info on graves etc in the area and anything on the Bayfords you could supply me with would be greatly appreciated please. I have a lot of relatives with various surnames who all lived in the surrounding area.

The Tofts in the 1800's lived in meesden, with most of the wives coming from Anstey, but also had relatives in the surrounding areas like the Pelhams

Many thanks
Tony

Yes, i'd come across them on a search. Not sure if they would be related to Edward as they all seemed to of changed their names to Tolfts, but a fair chance they are related to me in some way i think

Thanks
Tony

Hi

I have a number of William Bayfords in my tree, though at present I have not identified Tofts. Please give me more information regarding your William i.e parents, children siblings if you know of them. I am also looking into the feasability of holding a Bayford Day. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated See below :

Bayford Day – Feasibility Study

Aims and _object_ives of the Day[/b][/b]
- To bring members of the Bayford family together. This could also include the ‘_link_ed’ relations.
-To renew and establish new _link_s – if wished. (This could be done through a web portal.)
- Opportunity to meet other family members.
- To source and establish ancestors to complete family tree, feeding into a family web page.
- Opportunity for Bayford family members to find assistance and support to trace their own _link_s.

Topics for assessment GDC suggestions
Aims & _object_ives
- any others not listed
- any of the above not appropriate
Venue Pub in the East Hertfordshire (majority of Bayfords live Herts/Essex), with a meeting room for hire. Costing could be minimised as the provision of catering could be left to the individual.
Suggested times and dates10.00 – 20.00/Saturday/September 2008 – after the holiday season, when the weather is still pleasant for travelling
Costings and how funded- Room hire - £100 - £150
Catering – individual (if above venue)
Marketing – postage, printing
Record card costs
Funding – by individual donation/advertising/ stand bookings/sponsorship
Initial marketing suggestions Flyers/posters/direct mail/ e-mags/press releases/word of mouth/ancestry organisations
1)Your support – setting up the day yes/no
2)Your support – on the day yes/no Is this worth doing for the benefit of other family members?
1 – 10 (1 being no)

Hi Genia,

I've been having discussions with a few people offlist

I believe my William (b1784 in Furneax) might be the son of Ralph Bayford & Rachel Wootton. BUT i know there are others, who have been researching the Bayfords far longer than i have, who don't agree.

For example my William was married to a Sarah Whisbey (b1788 in Nuthamstead), but the majority opinion is that Ralphs son William was married to an Elizabeth Fish. We're still looking into this.

My William had the following children, Mary (b1803 in Barkway), James (b1805 in Anstey), Thomas (b1807 in Anstey), Sarah (b1808 in Anstey), Hannah (b1809) in Anstey, Rebecca (b1811 in Anstey)

If you have any info that might shed light on all this it would be greatly appreciated please

I probably couldn't take part in the Bayford Day unfortunately, but good luck with it

Many thanks
Tony

Tony

I also have Ralph and Rachel 's William marrying Elizabeth Fish, they had children Sarah & James. However not having done this bit of research myself I cannot confirm this is correct. However the herts library Allen Index identifies William and Elizabeth Fish marrying in Bishop Stortford 19 March 1811, William being resident in Harlow. So I think evidence needs to be qualified. The Allen Index shows your William marrying Sarah Whisbey in Anstey 13 June 1803. I thhink the parish records needs to be looked at to idenitify which William belongs to Ralph & Rachel and which William to another line.
